On 1st February 1929 Frederick Nason started a business from his mother's house in Monastery Street, trading as the Barnsley Linen Company. As his business increased he rented a garage for storage at the Saracen's Head, then two garages, then three. From there he moved to a suite of garages at 1 Old Dover Road. Then, in 1935 Nasons opened at 24 Castle Street.
At the outbreak of the Second Word War Mr Nason volunteered for service in the Eighth Army, serving in North Africa as part of the 2nd Dragoon Guards. 6½ years later he returned to the shop in Castle Street but didn't stay there for long. Expanding his business yet again he moved Nasons to St Margaret's Street, later buying the Foresters Hall in the High Street which would become the first part of the present store.
Over the following years he would purchase several adjoining properties, combining them to make one large store. At the end of 1962, Nasons Showrooms, with their distinctive peaked facade were built, winning design awards and giving the store a significant presence on the High Street.
Now the High Street premises comprise all or part of seven linked properties, including the Foresters Hall (the distinctive 19th Century curved edges of the hall’s ceiling are still visible in our furniture department today) and the site of Biggleston's Foundry. Preserved on the ground floor in what is now the ladies fashions department is the ancient window that is all that remains of the original St Mary Bredin church.
The store now houses a number of departments, ranging from the original linens and soft furnishings sections to the newer fashion floor, restaurant, coffee shop, cookshop, and concessions spread across over 40,000 square feet of selling space. In 1987 Nasons purchased and refurbished a second showroom of over 30,000 square feet on the Wincheap Estate, for the sale of furniture, beds and carpets, although leather furniture, beds and rugs are still on sale on the first and second floors in the High Street department store.
